It served as the capital of Las Californias from 1697 to 1777, and is the current seat of the municipality of Loreto in the Mexican State of Baja California Sur. Loreto is the heart of a natural paradise known as the Sea of Cortes considered by Jacques Cousteau as "The Aquarium of the World".

Loreto Bay, which includes Danzante, Coronado, Montserrat, Santa Catalina and Del Carmen Islands, has been protected as a National Marine Park since June 2000. Because of its biological diversity ad geological peculiarities with varied ecosystems. It provides refuge for mother-of-pearl, starfish, sea urchins, fan coral, killer whales, blue whales, dolphins and sea lions. The coastline in and around Loreto is one of the richest and most varied in Baja.

The desert climate around Loreto is typical of Baja. Here, the dry heat is complimented with cool sea breezes that blow off the Sea of Cortes, making the climate agreeable all year round.
